A runny nose and red eyes are never a good look – but they’re particularly annoying in summer, when you’re trying to get beach- ready!
“Summer allergies can cause severe symptoms for some sufferers, and can be just as bad as the spring and fall seasons,” said allergist Michael Foggs, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). “Symptoms aren’t always limited to the hallmark sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes. Black eyes, lines across the nose and other cosmetic symptoms can occur.” 1
Allergies can strike abruptly, at any age and any time of year – even if you’ve never had them before.
Here are some common symptoms of summer allergies:
- Resting allergy face – Looking tired and droopy? Nasal allergies can cause swelling of the adenoids (lymph tissue that extends behind the nose and lines the back of the throat).
- Mouth breathing – Severe nasal congestion can follow allergic rhinitis, and end up blocking your nose so badly that you end up breathing through your mouth.
- Allergic shiner – small blood vessels beneath the skin in the delicate eye area can swell and cause discolouration, causing dark circles under the eye.
- Nasal crease – rubbing the nose upwards to relieve nasal congestion can cause a line across the bridge of the nose.
According to the ACAAI, pollen, mold and insect stings are common allergy culprits during the summer months. “Summer allergy symptoms can easily be mistaken for colds, food intolerances or other ailments,” said Dr. Foggs.
If you’re struggling with summer allergies, kefir is the answer! Researchers at the Institute of Food Research (IFR) have found that taking a daily probiotic drink like kefir actually positively alters the way your immune system responds to grass pollen. 2
Because your microbiome is under constant assault from sugar, stress, environmental toxins and low levels of antibiotics leaching into your system from the food chain, it’s important to keep your immune system boosted on a regular basis.
We recommend that you take a seasonal booster of kefir quarterly: spring, summer, autumn and winter. This will keep your immune system strong, and help you cope with seasonal allergies.
